Strange Relationships

Post by admin »

On February 23, 2022 our city council approved Sebastopol Recreational Vehicle (RV) Parking Ordinance No. 1136, which went into effect on March 26, 2022. Mayor Hinton and Vice Mayor Rich voted to approve the ordinance.

On Oct. 25, 2022, the ACLU Foundation of Northern California, Disability Rights Advocates, Legal Aid of Sonoma County, and California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. filed suit against the city of Sebastopol for enacting an ordinance that unlawfully prohibits vehicles “used for human habitation” from parking anywhere within city limits during the day. The status of this litigation is active.

The council's agenda for the upcoming September 5 meeting includes an: Informational Item/Presentation on Eviction Process and Potential Protections by Margaret DeMatteo, Attorney for Legal Aid of Sonoma County.
  • Why would our council request advice regarding a proposed rent control measure from an organization that is currently Sebastopol's legal adversary?
  • Why hasn't our council requested an Informational Item/Presentation from representatives of the landlords and property managers who will be directly affected by the proposed rent control measure?
  • Why does our city council deem input from non-profit organizations more valuable than input from local business owners who are habitually relegated to two minutes of public comment during meetings?
